BAIC BJ60

2026-09-19 18:40:02

The BAIC BJ60 (frequently badged in overseas markets as the BAIC BJ60 or BJ60 Flagship/Honor) is a body-on-frame mid-to-large luxury rugged off-road SUV independently developed by BAIC Motor Corporation, Limited (BAIC Off-Road). Developed around the core ethos of "Family & Play", the model successfully blends heavy-duty overland durability with the cabin comfort and generous space of an urban SUV, serving as BAIC's flagship offering in the mid-to-high-end all-terrain family segment both in China and across global markets.

Vehicle Overview

Positioned as a mid-to-large off-road SUV, the BAIC BJ60 is available in 5-seater and 7-seater configurations. Within the Chinese rugged 4x4 fraternity, the model has built a reputation as a "Comfortable Off-road SUV". Its key highlights include a rigid ladder frame chassis, a class-rare four-wheel independent suspension setup, a part-time 4WD system, and triple differential locks (front, centre, and rear) for serious off-road recovery. With an official price tag ranging from RM238,800 to RM285,800, it squarely targets larger families seeking overland touring capability without compromising on passenger comfort.

Development History

The BAIC BJ60 was engineered to bridge the gap between the BJ40 and BJ80, specifically tackling the age-old issue where traditional rugged 4x4s suffered from a harsh, bumpy rear-seat ride unsuited for family duty. Making its pre-sale debut at the 2022 Chengdu Motor Show before officially launching in November that year, the SUV debuted with a 2.0T petrol engine coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system. In September 2023, catering to hardcore overland tourers needing extended range and low-end grunt, BAIC added the "Qianli Edition" powered by a new diesel powertrain stack, complete with auxiliary fuel tank mounting provisions that push total cruising range past the 1,000 km mark.

Following proven mechanical reliability in harsh testing conditions, export programmes gathered pace. Between 2025 and 2026, BAIC International rolled out market-tailored export variants of the BJ60 (offered in Exclusive, Honor, and Flagship trims) across the Middle East, South America, and Central Asia. In early 2026, the model received an annual update with variants like the 2026 2.0T Zhuoyue Edition, featuring fine-tuned drivetrain calibration and enhanced cabin NVH insulation to sustain the multi-powertrain all-terrain platform's market competitiveness.

Market Performance

The BAIC BJ60 has delivered steady sales volumes across both domestic and export mid-to-large rugged off-road segments. In China, it rivals the Tank 500 in the premium petrol ladder-frame SUV arena, enjoying strong traction among touring and overland enthusiasts. In key overseas export markets, the BAIC BJ60 commands notable pricing strength. Industry retail data up to 2026 reveals that across major Middle Eastern markets such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, the BJ60 retails between 175,000 and 210,000 Saudi Riyals (or UAE Dirhams). Delivering road presence on par with established Japanese icons like the Land Cruiser alongside superior digital tech, it offers a pragmatic, high-value alternative for dune bashing and everyday family duties alike.

Core Technology

Dimensionally, the BAIC BJ60 commands an imposing road presence, measuring 5,040 mm in length, 1,955 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. Kerb weight ranges from 2,295 kg to 2,450 kg depending on powertrain and trim level, supported by an 85-litre main fuel tank. For off-road capability, it boasts a ground clearance of 215 mm and a maximum wading depth of 750 mm.

The powertrain lineup offers both petrol and diesel options:

2.0T Petrol + 48V Mild Hybrid: Powered by a 4G20TD 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid setup, delivering a maximum output of 196 kW (approx. 267 hp, with certain overseas market calibrations rated at 250–263 hp) and 406 Nm of peak torque. Power is channelled through a ZF 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (8AT), with an official top speed of 180 km/h.

2.0T Diesel + 48V Mild Hybrid: The Qianli Edition employs BAIC's in-house Magic Core 2.0T turbodiesel unit pushing out 120 kW (approx. 163 hp), delivering a muscular 400 Nm of low-end torque characteristic of oil-burners.

Drivetrain and Chassis: An electronically controlled part-time 4WD system comes standard across the range, integrated with the ATS All-Terrain Intelligent Control System offering 17 driving modes. Underneath, while built on a rigid body-on-frame ladder chassis, it eschews a traditional solid rear axle in favour of front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, significantly smoothing out road imperfections on tarmac.

In-cabin technology includes a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, and a head-up display (HUD). Both front and rear seats are upholstered in double-stitched leather, offering seat heating, ventilation, and pneumatic massage functions. On the safety front, the SUV comes equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), incorporating full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Future Plans

As the global 4x4 market transitions towards electrification and advanced intelligent driving, the BAIC BJ60 platform is set for further development. Upcoming product strategies centre on the rollout of an extended-range EV (EREV) powertrain and homologation for right-hand-drive (RHD) markets. BAIC plans to scale up the dual-motor electric 4WD "Super Range-Extended" architecture proven in the BJ40e, with an EREV variant slated for the BJ60 within the next two to three years to deliver low fuel consumption alongside zero-range-anxiety overland capability. Concurrently, targeting high-barrier 4x4 markets like Australia and South Africa, BAIC is accelerating crash test compliance and homologation for the RHD BJ60 to expand its global footprint.
